Scratchbuilding
|
|
When
building from scratch or kits, the primary focus is on authenticity. When
doing a project for a client, built-up or kits are sometimes the most
affordable ways to keep a project within budget. I can naturally
incorporate built-up structures or build commercially available models at
your request. These can also be dressed up with finer details and
accessories for added realism. Light or heavy weathering and detailing are important for a convincing scenes as well and is typically included in my process.
Sometimes
a particular item isn't available over the counter and scartchbuilding is
the only way it can be done. The following photos are a collection of
scratchbuilt items that I've done in the past or am in the process of
working on. Enjoy the photos.

You'll not see one of these short
body cabooses produced in plastic. This is a CA-11 caboose made for the Union
Pacific up till around 1996. All totaled, around 80 were produced. I photographed
a prototype at UP's Ogden rail yard and had to have one.

1 of 2 Devil's Gate deck girder
bridges I scratchbuilt for the Weber Canyon layout. Over 30" long with a 3/4" aluminum tube superstructure for
excellent strength.
|
Pre BLMA's nice cantilever
bridges...if you didn't scatchbuild them...you didn't have them.
This bridge was custom designed to handle bi-directional traffic as it had heads
on both sides. Note that other scratchbuilt signals are visible in the photo.

Trinity Steel Fabrication - Main
building was made out of artist matte board. This structure was made affordably
and turnout quite well. It also included 1.5V interior incandescent lighting.

Trinity Steel Fabrication -
Warehouse building also was made out of artist matte board and included 1.5V
interior incandescent lighting.

This photo shows the raw styrene
Weber Canyon River flood control facility building. The dam foundations are made
out of MDF and the lower sitting structure sits on a 1 piece hand carved wood
foundation.

This Carl's Jr. restaurant is made
out of styrene. The corporate sign work created using actual photographs, edited
then printed on a standard inkjet printer.

This Tesoro gas station is made out
of styrene. Although hard to see on the awning support poles, are window washing
stations with the squeegee handles sticking out of the bucket - cool detail if
you look closely. The corporate sign work created using actual photographs,
edited then printed on a standard inkjet printer.

Pretty simple and basic Tunex auto
shop. Sometimes simple is realistic. Never did get to fully detail the interior.
Thanks for
looking!
